Being reunited with my best friends and my sister was... the greatest thing ever. I had not realized until then how much I had missed them. I do not know who won, though, but what I do remember is Beyoncé giving a kick-ass halftime performance)...

I could only hold in the crazy for so long). Eigentlich habe ich mir die Bücher gekauft, um den Moment hinauszuzögern, in dem ich erst zum zweiten Mal in meinem Leben ein Automatikauto fahren würde, which turned out to be significantly less scary than I had anticipated.

Miami takes your breath away, and in more than one way: Strand, Wolkenkratzer, weite Plätze und breite Straßen, Pastellfarben – das waren meine ersten Eindrücke von Dexters hometown. Und gut gegessen haben wir! Frozen yogurt at Red Mango's, pizza at an Italian restaurant (Fratelli La Bufala)...

Auf unserem Weg von Miami zu den Keys I introduced my friends and my sister to the species known to man as Walmart People – zu erkennen an: hohem Übergewicht, ungepflegtem Äußeren und dem obligatory Rollator. At least, Dani got to buy a pack of faux twinkies.

Der Soundtrack unserer Reise wurde dennoch ein anderer: "Scream and Shout", dessen hookline Dani misheard on purpose, singing "meow meow meow meow" instead of "oh we oh we oh we oh" (which is even more nonsensical than the former).

Unsere Unterkunft in Orlando war creepy as fuck und der owner war creepy as fuck, too, so creepy indeed that we thought he might be a serial killer. War er dann doch nicht, doch die Amerikanerin und der Deutsche, die in einem Zelt vor unserem Zimmer... did the hanky panky, bereiteten Dani, Michi und Tina eine schlaflose Nacht (thank you, Ohropax).

Nach unserem Umzug in ein less creepy hotel am Tag darauf belohnten wir uns mit einem Picknick am Lake Eola und – later that night – mit dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. An unserem letzten gemeinsamen Tag standen wir in Disneyworld an (from time to time, we went on rides, too, but the bulk of our time, we spent waiting in line to get on one of the few rides they had there).
I hope the neighbors did not see me; they think we are conspicuous enough as it is).

Nach einer kalten, kurzen Nacht in Brian's room ging es Samstag früh retour nach Hicksville (which, as a not totally unattractive South African told me, is a very accurate description of the place we are living in).

Sonntag haben Stéphanie und ich Perlen des US-amerikanischen Kabelfernsehens wie "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" und "Plastic Wives" über uns ergehen lassen, compared to which ATV's "Saturday Night Fever", which I still have not seen, niveauvolles Unterhaltungsfernsehen ist.

Montag ist Nao heimgekommen – von Vancouver, BC. Und Dienstag haben wir, atama no ue no neko (or along these lines; Japanese does not roll off the tongue as easily as Spanish does), zu Mittag in einem Diner gegessen: Salat, ein halbes Sandwich, and a slice of pie.
Well, I am back home. Ich bin zurück zuhause (home being our house on our college campus here in Northwest Oregon). Zwei meiner Mitbewohnerinnen, Nao und Vanessa, sind verreist: nach Vancouver, BC und San Diego, CA, respectively. Und Stéphanie und ich are being our usual crazy European selves.

And what a great decision that was... Um 7,99$ haben wir a salad, a piece of quiche, and a piece of pie bekommen.

Nach dem Interview, which I really enjoyed because the students were nice and, for the greater part, actually interested in what I had to say, and, for once, asked questions, bin ich nach Hause gegangen, um, homely as I am, meiner Mitbewohnerin Apfelspalten zu kochen.

Und den Song (and it is fucking awesome):
If you say about someone that they have or show aloha, it means that they are a friendly person. And on Hawai'i, everyone has aloha. Well, almost everyone, but I am not going to dwell on those few who, in my long and vast experience of living in the Rainbow State, do not.

Talking 'bout the Rainbow State... Let's dwell on this for a little.

Grand indeed

Von Las Vegas ist's weitergegangen nach Honolulu on the beautiful island of O'ahu in the beautiful state of Hawaii.

Wow...

Zimtsterne

Und in den nächsten vier Tagen haben mich die Verwandten auf eine tour de ethnic food mitgenommen und wir haben Chinesisch, Amerikanisch, Italienisch, Mexikanisch (I ordered in Spanish: "¿Me podría traer un café mexicano?", so proud of myself, well, at least until the guy started asking me what else I wanted to order and gave me different options and I had only a vague idea what these were), wieder Amerikanisch (French toast doughnut, nom, nom, nom), wieder Italienisch und Thai gegessen.
Daher: frohe Weihnachten, I guess.
Kiera invited me over to her house in Salem over Thanksgiving break.

Monday

I meant to go there on Monday, and after cleaning the kitchen and doing the laundry and packing my suitcase, I left for Salem - or so I thought. Because when I got to the bus stop, the bus was not there yet, and when it finally came down the road (already 15 minutes late), the bus driver chose to ignore me and drove right past me. Angry though I was, there was nothing I could do about it, so I went back home in the pouring rain, and wrote an email to Kiera telling her about my bad luck, and another one to Stéphanie, the latter containing a dozen different varieties of the f-word. Then I prepared dinner.

I was eating my pasta, when out of the blue, someone knocked on the door. Imagine: heavy rain outside, me all by myself in a house on a deserted and pitch-dark campus, and when I asked who was there, no one answered. How relieved was I when I opened the door and outside stood Campo. They told me a Lena wanted to talk to me. I had no idea who Lena was, but it turned out to be Kiera's mom, who wanted to let me know that she would send a friend to pick me up, my own private chauffeur, if you want. When he picked me up, he asked me about where I was from, and in the ensuing conversation, he confused Vienna with Venice. Not only am I Australian, but Venetian, too.
When he dropped me off at Kiera's place, I met Kiera's mom and her 17-year-old brother and her 8-week-old cat.

Tuesday

Around noon, Kiera and I went to a café on a farm, and I had a latte and forest berry pie there. Kiera bought two deep-frozen pies because her mom had told her to, and then we went to the Capitol, where I snapped pictures of the Senate, the Governor's office, and the House of Representatives.

From there, we went to Kiera's highschool, and everyone there told me I looked familiar, and a couple teachers mistook me for a former student. Who knew I would have a doppelgänger on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean (well, actually, the Pacific)?

Wednesday

Kiera and I had lunch at her aunt's B&B in Stayton, and for dessert, we indulged in her insanely delicious chocolate soufflé cake. We went back home to pick up the kitten, and before taking it to the vet, we picked up Stéphanie at the Greyhound bus station.
Kiera's cousin Mike and his roommate at OSU arrived later that afternoon, and together, we watched football for a while before gathering around the dinner table. After dinner, we all prepared pie crust for Thanksgiving dinner the next day, and then Patrick made caramel popcorn, and though I usually do not like caramel popcorn, his was really good... maybe because it was homemade.
Thursday

Thanksgiving... Kiera's mom got up at 8am, and began cooking at 9am. Once she had stuffed the turkey and shoved it into the oven, she started preparing the yams. Meanwhile, I talked to my mom on Skype because it was her 50th birthday, and I talked to my cousin's 14-month-old daughter, too. :)

Later that day, Kiera, Stéphanie and I went for a walk, while the guys stayed at home playing video games. It had been raining for four days by then, so of course, the ground was muddy, and Stéphanie tripped, but fortunately, she did not fall because our shoes got dirty enough as it was. When we got home, we helped Kiera's mom prepare dinner. We made mashed potatoes and green bean casserole and carrots. At four, we put everything on the table, which bowed under the weight of all that food. And that is when the feast started.

Because not only did we eat turkey and everything else on the table, but we had dessert, too: one slice of pumpkin pie with homemade whipped cream, and one slice of apple pie à la mode. Kiera's mom had bought Umpqua Beaver Tracks Ice Cream, which was, excuse my French, fucking delicious... like everything else we had eaten that day. Oh, and we drank sparkling apple cider, which, to Stéphanie's and my utter disappointment, does not contain alcohol, but it was pretty good, nonetheless.

All in all, my first American Thanksgiving was great... thanks to Kiera and her family. And the day had felt very Christmasy, partly due to the holiday spirit and partly due to radio stations starting to play Christmas carols that night.

Friday

We got up early to go Black Friday shopping. Patrick had gone to Best Buy the day before to get the new FIFA game (after waiting in line for four hours). That is why he stayed home, while Kiera's mom, Kiera, Stéphanie and I took off to Fred Meyer and Kohl's and Made in Oregon and Bath & Body Works and Macy's. At the former, we got free coffee and free doughnuts.

When we got back, Kiera's mom took Mike and his roommate at OSU back to Corvallis, and I came along for the ride. On the way home, Kiera's mom let me get into the driver's seat, and, believe it or not, I drove all the way home, although it was raining cats and dogs, and it was pitch-dark, and you could not see a damn thing.

But we survived. And I rewarded myself with Thanksgiving leftovers for dinner and cookies for dessert.

Saturday

Kiera's mom took us grocery shopping, and then back home, where we reunited with Nao, goofed around, and were our usual silly selves. And of course, we tuned in to the radio station that plays Christmas carols 24/7. Because after all, Christmas is only four weeks away. :)

I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving.
I already mentioned how much I love grocery shopping in the States?).
I lost my keys, baked Linzer Schnitten, played Werewolf on Halloween, watched a French movie, watched a German movie, talked Danish with an American, played "Ich packe in meinen Koffer..."* in German class on Friday, had dinner at a Mexican restaurant, went to the gym, and bought a turquoise sweater. (This was my week in a nutshell.)
Und ich bin endlich nach downtown gekommen. 'Twas about time. But first things first...

They had this great calendar which I was very tempted to buy, but taking into account my finances, refrained from buying:

Ziegen in Bäumen - why didn't I think of that?

Nachher haben wir einen Spaziergang auf dem Campus der Portland State University (PSU) gemacht und ich habe eigentlich vorgehabt, mir ein university sweatshirt zu kaufen, doch der store war leider nicht mehr geöffnet by the time we got there.

Am Pioneer Courthouse Square, Portland's living room, hat jemand dem Regenschirmmann eine Hand in die Hand gedrückt, which looked like this:

Umbrella Man

Am Abend haben wir dann die französische Verfilmung eines französischen Romans, L'Élégance du hérisson par Muriel Barbery, geschaut, which turned out to be better than I had expected.

Heute waren wir am Saturday Market (yes, on a Sunday), wo es wie aus Schaffeln geschüttet hat, or it was raining cats and dogs, whichever you prefer.

We're like Dexter: cutting up corpses, dismembering the dead,..." Der Vergleich definitely floated my boat.

The Artist angeschaut, which I enjoyed way more than I had expected.

Call me prejudiced or judgmental, but I have never thought of serial killers as of deeply misunderstood individuals who need our pity and after whom we might want to name our kids (which is not to say that I don't immensely enjoy "Dexter").

Um 22:30 Uhr sind wir noch grocery shopping gefahren (I can't get over the opening hours in the US, they blow my mind every fucking time) und nach Dr. Chill habe ich mein zweites generic Dr Pepper gekauft: Dr. Shasta.
Fuck, yeah Wonder why it says 'fuck, yeah' in the title? Well, we're playing jeopardy, and 'fuck, yeah's the answer to the question: did the students ace the presentation? Which students, and which presentation?, you may ask. Well, the Deutschklassler and the Pingu presentation. Remember I told you they had to create captions for an episode, in which Pingu, the penguin, and his friend Robby, the seal, go snowboarding? They did a great job, and I recorded them. But let's go back to our game of Jeopardy!.

Wanna play?

Hier die Antworten:

a. Das Fliegerlied.
b. Dexter.
c. STD.
d. Mein Bruder.
e. Too nice.
f. Striezel.
g. A puzzle over the states and their capitals.
h. MILF.

Hier die Fragen:

Am Dienstag haben wir unseren Couchtisch dekoriert und nebenbei "Grease" geschaut, which gave us the idea to dress up as the pink ladies for Halloween. Any other (better) suggestions?

Had a jolly good time, haha. Und einer der German-030-Klassler hat sich seine selbst gemalten Bilder mittlerweile an den Kühlschrank geheftet, which makes me think they had a good time, too.

Seems they don't have it here. Mein Preis war ein Puzzle der Staaten which make up the US. Finally, I will get to learn their exact location as well as their capitals.

It's a great way to brush up on your German." Yeah, cause that's what I need to do. Brush up on my German. :D)

Danach haben wir einen Stopp bei Voodoo Doughnut in Portland eingelegt, which is the best fucking doughnut shop in the world. Ja, believe it or not, bacon.

I had had three weeks ago. Und... Nutter Butter sandwich cookies. Nom nom nom.

It's a thing here, and I hope that by the time I get back, it'll be a thing back home, too. Anyway, it's hilarious. Here's how you do it (the awkward turtle, not its life cycle, I'll teach you that one in one of my next posts):

The next item on my bucket list is moonlight kayaking in Portland on 28 September.

Und Oregon has such breathtakingly beautiful scenery, and such picturesque landscapes.

“There’s only one God, ma’am, and I’m pretty sure he doesn’t dress like that.”
Dezember kann kommen. Und dann Jänner und Feber, with me going to Miami. Dexter lässt grüßen. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09920751554764593605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9072150818359613380.post-46456944498523452722012-08-31T22:40:00.003-07:002012-08-31T22:41:08.928-07:00All-American Ich bin zwar erst seit sieben Tagen hier, aber it already feels like home. Very cute- his 'R', not Jason.

Dann habe ich Spanish 105, where I try hard to be the best. So competitive. Naja. Und dienstags und donnerstags zuerst Politics & Religion, dann German 301 und am Abend Badminton Club (thinking about joining Skiing and Snowboarding Club, but not sure how or where to find them). Mittwochs German Table und dazwischen I do my best to get German Club started. My life here is pretty busy, but I love it.

I got stung by a bee. Und wir haben eine amerikanische Nachspeise gegessen, deren Kaloriengehalt off the scale war: Shortbread mit gezuckerten Erdbeeren mit gezuckertem Schlagobers- soviel zu gesunder Ernährung.

Heute hatte ich mein erstes oral exam in Spanish. I aced it. Am Nachmittag waren wir mit Dawn Eis essen- I had my all-time favorite, strawberry cheesecake ice cream. Dawn hat uns geraten, einen dicken Pullover anzuziehen "because you will be freezing."

But don't get me started on the weather...

So hat heute ein jeder unserer Sätze angefangen: "You know, in the movies..."

It looks like an Oreo® on steroids."

That's it for today. I will keep you updated. In the meanwhile, feel free to leave comments.
It culminated in a reception during which the participants performed ethnic songs, dances, etc.
